April Showers and Foolish Pranks
April. Some folks get all dewy-eyed about it. Birds chirpin’, flowers poppin’ up…me? I think April’s a bit of a tease. One minute, you’re in short sleeves, the next, you’re diggin’ out your long-johns. Cold weather on Easter? That’s April for ya. It’ll Freeze the ears right off the Easter Bunny, I tell ya. And it’s my birthday month, too, which means I’ve survived another year of this craziness.
Then there’s the rain. “April showers bring May flowers,” they say. Well, I’d rather have the flowers now. My yard looks like a gopher tortoise convention. And try explainin’ to your dog why he can’t chase squirrels in a downpour. He’ll look at you like you’re crazier than a Betsy bug in a fruit jar.
And April Fools’ Day? Amateur night for pranksters. Folks get tricked into thinkin’ they won the lottery by their cousin Bubba. Bubba, who owes ’em twenty bucks. Even the news tries to be funny. Can’t tell if they’re serious or just pullin’ your leg.
But April ain’t all bad. Baseball season starts, which is a plus. And after winter, any sign of spring is welcome. Even if it’s just a little flirty. Like a pretty woman smilin’ at you, then turnin’ around to talk to some rich fella. That’s April.
So, here’s to April. Mixed blessings, crazy weather, and practical jokes. Don’t get too excited. April’s liable to change her mind any minute. You’ll be standin’ there with your umbrella and short sleeves, lookin’ like a fool. Just another April victim. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear Bubba callin’ ’bout that twenty bucks…and maybe I’ll go get myself a birthday key lime pie.
