March: The Month That Can’t Decide What It Wants to Be
Well, it’s March again, and I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for it. March is that weird month where winter’s holding on like a dog to a bone, and spring is trying to sneak up like a neighbor who knows you’ve got good snacks in the cupboard. March is the fickle woman of months. It’s got a mind of its own. The wind’s blowing one minute, and the next minute, you’re staring at a blue sky wondering if winter ever existed.
But then, March brings us March Madness, and suddenly the weather doesn’t matter. College basketball takes over like it’s the only thing on Earth that matters, and for good reason. If you’ve ever watched the NCAA Tournament, you know that it’s about more than just basketball. It’s about yelling at the T.V. in a way that’s completely inappropriate for someone your age and stature. It’s about those underdog teams that make you feel like the little guy can win sometimes. Even if it’s just for one game. And if you’ve never filled out a bracket, well, you are missing out. Nothing beats the pure joy of picking a Cinderella team and watching them make a run all the way to the Final Four. Even if you don’t have a clue what you’re doing.
But let’s not forget about March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. Now, I’ve got nothing against the Irish, but I’m still not sure why we all wear green, drink Guinness, and pretend like we’ve got shamrocks tattooed on our souls. It’s a fun day, no doubt about it. Parades, corned beef, and a few too many green beers. It’s the one day of the year when it’s socially acceptable to act like you just stumbled off the boat from Dublin, even if the closest you’ve ever been to Ireland is watching The Quiet Man on T.V. And, let’s face it, we could all use a little bit more carefree spirit now and then.
So, March may be unpredictable. Cold one day, warm the next. But it’s also full of hope. It’s the month when basketball dreams come true, when we all pretend to be Irish for a day, and when you start to feel like spring’s just around the corner. It’s the month where, no matter what the weather does, you know something exciting is about to happen.
Now go grab a cold one, fill out your bracket, and don’t forget to wear green on the 17th. After all, it’s March. And anything can happen.
