Donkey’s Awesome Afternoon

Dan is an ordinary, dusty, old donkey of the remarkable age of 60, the same age as his owner, Violet. E is an Andalusian Donkey with eighteen-inch ears. He is blessed in all ways. His day starts out the same every day on Violet’s farm.

Hunger is the first thing on the list. Barley straw, it looks like, as he goes over to check it out. Maybe later, a carrot or an apple, he hopes. Violet is careful with his diet as she knows he is happiest when healthy. Dan requires the cleanest and freshest water to drink; that keeps Violet busy, too. Sometimes she and Dan chase butterflies together.

Dan has other friends to play with, too. His best friend is the crafty goat named Murphy. He loves to climb. Sometimes he and Dan graze on the grass by the rocks.

He sees his other friend, Porch Pig. She spends a lot of time on Violet’s porch, with her fans and plants. The music plays on while Violet paints.

Today, everyone is outside in the nice morning. Dan’s white horse friend is there. He’s a stallion and his name is Hercules. Dan doesn’t care what an animal looks like, really; anyone can be a friend.

Dan knows a very entertaining dazzle of zebras. I bet they get hungry too.

As the sun grew high and strong in the sky, the group of animals started heading off. They were looking for shade from the hot Middle Eastern sun.

Dan was planning on going into the barn, but you never know when plans might change. Today, there was a group of strange men by the front door.

Violet looked over at Dan and waved her hand for him to come. Dan was a very obedient donkey. The men put a harness on him, took the reins and led Dan down the dusty road. Dan was very curious about

the new journey he was on. Eventually they came to a large crowd at a crossroads.

A man came forward and patted Dan’s face. He got on Dan’s back and off they wet toward Jerusalem. The crowd began to grow and the noise was a lot for a guy with eighteen-inch ears.

Dan began to realize how important the man on his back was when people laid down their coats for them to walk on. The people waved palm leaves and cheered. They sang Hosanna, glory to the highest.

Dan loved being part of a grand parade. He had always secretly prayed that someday he would be part of an important event and get to go to the big city. They passed through the city gates, and more people sang to the man on Dan’s back. Praising him for being who he said he was. The Prince of Peace. The Great Redeemer. The King of Kings. They walked a little way into the city, and then it was time for the man to get off. He patted Dan on the head and said, “Good job, faithful donkey.”

Dan heard a man say, “Bless you, Messiah, and the donkey you rode in on.”

Wow; what a turn of events! Before Dan turned for home, he took a long, last look at his savior. Dan had an excellent sense of direction, so off he went out of the city by himself. He silently sent up a prayer, “May the love of God be with you.” Imagine a dusty old donkey having the opportunity to pray for the Divine One! To be of service to the great “I am.” God truly can use the small and meek. He could hardly wait to get back home and tell Violet and his friends about his awesome afternoon.
